The second part of the Baia Wind Park project, Baia II (10 MW) reached generation stage at the end of July this year.

03.08.2011 Romanian Green Certificates Support Scheme Approved

With a portfolio of 500 MW in wind energy under development and 55 MW of PV projects at ready-to-build stage in Romania, Renovatio welcomes the approval of the Romanian green certificates support scheme combined with quota obligation.

In the first half of July 2011, the European Commission endorsed Romania's green certificate support scheme for renewable energy sources, supporting the country's commitment to reach the 24% RES-target by 2020 laid out in its National Renewable Energy Action Plan. Creating clear incentives to increase use of renewable energy, energy suppliers in Romania are - according to the support scheme system - obliged to purchase a certain number of green certificates annually.

In effect, green certificates are granted to electricity producers from wind, solar, hydro, biomass, landfill gas and sewage plant treatment gas for each MWh generated. Providing a friendlier market for future investment in the renewable energy sector, the certificates are to be issued by the Transport System Operator to renewable energy producers, which are acquired by energy suppliers on a specific market. Penalties apply should the energy suppliers fail to acquire the set target of certificates.

Regarded as one of the countries with the highest wind energy potentials in Central Eastern Europe as well as having significant solar exposure, Romania has the potential to play an important role within the renewable energy market in the region.
